The lining, structure and shoulder terms you meet when specifying a jacket.
- Unstructured jacket
- A jacket built with little or no shoulder padding and a minimal or absent canvas, so the cloth falls softly against the body instead of holding a rigid shape. Lighter and more relaxed than a structured jacket. The foundation of soft tailoring.
- Unlined jacket
- A jacket made without an inner lining, so the seams are finished (often bound or taped) and the cloth sits directly against the shirt. The lightest, most breathable make, ideal for warm weather, and a showcase of clean interior finishing.
- Half-lined jacket
- A jacket lined through the chest and shoulders but left open across the back, often with bound or 'butterfly' seams on show. It cuts weight and adds breathability while keeping a tidy, structured-looking front. A popular year-round middle ground.
- Fully lined jacket
- A jacket lined throughout the body and sleeves. It gives the cleanest interior, the smoothest layering over knitwear and the most formal feel, at the cost of weight and breathability.
- Neapolitan shoulder (spalla camicia)
