Your First Made-to-Measure Suit: What to Expect, What to Choose, and What It Costs

What makes a made-to-measure suit different

A ready-to-wear suit is made in standard sizes and altered to approximate fit. A made-to-measure suit is patterned from your exact measurements — your chest, your waist, your shoulder width, your trouser rise, your inseam. There is no alteration because there is no standard to alter from.

The result: a suit that sits on your body the way a suit is supposed to sit. The shoulder does not pull. The jacket does not billow. The trousers break at the right point.

If you have never worn a suit built to your measurements, the first time you put it on is a genuinely different experience.

The three construction choices

Fused — A modern interlining is bonded to the chest piece with heat. The suit has a clean, structured silhouette and is easy to care for. This is the right choice for a first suit, a business wardrobe, or a formal event.

Half Canvas — The chest and lapels are hand-stitched to a floating canvas piece. The lower body is fused. The suit drapes more naturally and improves with regular wear over months. This is the most popular construction among our clients.

Full Canvas — The entire jacket front is stitched to a floating horsehair canvas. The suit molds to your body over time. This is the finest construction available and is recommended for clients who will wear the suit regularly and want it to last 10–20 years.

Choosing your fabric

For a first suit, we recommend starting in the mid-range — either Tailor’s Choice (70% wool, from €127) or British Legacy (UK mill fabric, from €165). Both are beautiful, durable fabrics that work across business and formal occasions.

If this is for a wedding, a significant event, or you simply want the best: our Loro Piana and Zegna fabrics are available from €414 ex-works. These are the same fabrics used in the finest European ateliers.

What it costs

Starting from €108 ex-works (Classic Fused) + shipping. Most personal clients receive their suit for €150–200 total landed cost in Europe, depending on fabric choice and location.

For context: a comparable level of construction and fabric in a European atelier typically starts at €800–1,200.
